The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell came out last year and just kept slipping away from me. I hadn’t heard of Christine McConnell at this point. I wasn’t much for Instagram. It’s funny really because a secret ambition of mine is to bake horror themed cakes. If you haven’t seen it advertised, it’s a show about a beautiful women living in a spooky house with some sarcastic puppets (a franken-raccoon called Rose, a naked Egyptian cat that’s been resurrected called Rankle, a werewolf as well as other creatures), as she bakes the most wonderful Halloween and horror themed goodies and crafts some fun and amazing items. She makes a dress, a pair of wings, a candle for example but also a fabulous haunted house cake, wolf claw doughnuts and other yummy treats. Dita von Teese lives in a mirror and there’s a good possibility her boyfriend is a serial killer.
I have to be honest it’s more food porn than a cookery show because the majority of wonderful things she makes would be beyond us mere mortals. The items needed can also be specialist and quite probably expensive. There were hints and tips though I could certainly try in my own baking and crafts. I particularly want to try the evil tree candle, although I can see mine being slightly messier!
It’s rated a 12 because of some adult themes and humour. I feel it straddles the family show, adult show divide a little and could do with being more on one side of the other. Some of the humour is groan worthy but I liked the series a lot and was very disappointed to find out that Netflix haven’t picked it up for a second season. I wonder if it’s because it was a difficult one to categorize and people genuinely missed it. I binged this in one afternoon.
4/5 Fun food and crafts on the run up to Halloween. I have a girl crush on the amazing Christine McConnell, what a beautiful and talented lady. Seriously…I need an invite to come round for tea!
If you enjoy this series, I was delighted to find out she now has a web series…which while we no longer have the puppets we still have crafty goodness Christine McConnell Youtube .
