Hell Fest (2018) features Bex Taylor-Klaus from the series Scream, which swayed me towards watching it because I enjoyed her character in Scream (unfortunately I found her really irritating in this) and also because it was Halloweeny and I want to get into the Halloween mood (maybe prematurely but who cares).
The premise is 3 friends and their boyfriends have tickets for a Halloween amusement park (which me and hubby have decided is our plan to open one when we win the lottery). A serial killer is stalking the ground, which is perfect because who would spot him among the other masked actors and horror props. He targets one of the group and starts following them, picking them off. That’s it really…nothing deeper. I was bored not far in and became distracted. I jumped once but I think it was a fluke as I’m not an easy jumper. There was a little twist at the end. Ooo it had Tony Todd in as a little cameo…But on the whole I didn’t love the characters, even the teenager didn’t find any common ground with the teens. There was real potential in the idea, it just didn’t develop it beyond carbon copy teen slasher. The husband says it took an old idea and tried to modernize it which left it confused. He liked the ending and loved the premise. He said he liked the attempt but overall it didn’t work.
It only gets 2/5 from me as I felt it was unoriginal and lacked scares and tension throughout. It was predictable. Teen slasher…been there before, wouldn’t pay for the T.Shirt.
