Thornton Abbey is a medieval Augustinian abbey ruin in North Lincolnshire. In 2016, they excavated a black death plague pit here. Also a skeleton has been found walled up in the abbey walls with a table, book and candlestick. It is suggested that was the 14th abbot, Thomas de Gretham being punished for some nefarious crime. One suggestion is that he dabbled in black magic and was walled up alive. His ghost is said to roam the grounds. The boy and I went for his GCSE photography project. It was a beautiful autumn morning and I didn’t pick up any negative feelings on the site on this visit. However, I can imagine it is a different feeling altogether when the nights draw in and you’re alone in the grounds.
