I have been sadly absent from my blog due to a birthday, a holiday and returning to work after a long bout of mental illness. I have started my 40’s with a midlife crisis by piercing my ears in new places. I was also….not in the UK for Halloween! I was in Rhodes, very beautiful but I felt the lack of Halloween celebrations very deeply.
Anyway, back to the blog and reviews. Last night we watched K-Shop (2016) . It’s a British film and revolves around a kebab shop. Outside we see real life footage of drunks on a night out, every night, having sex, vomiting…..it is actually pure horror just to watch these scenes. Salah is trying to finish his dissertation but his father is ill so he starts to help with the kebab shop. Not long out of hospital, some drunks start causing problems in the shop and his father dies after a tussle with them. Salah takes over the shop and also starts taking matters into his own hands. There’s some gore, murder and cannibalism. It’s also very much a commentary on binge drinking culture and humanity.
You sympathise with Salah, knowing that the abuse he receives is very real to takeaway owners across the UK. The film is dark and gritty. There is some tongue in cheek humour but mainly it was sad due to the sacrifices Salah has made. The acting was very good throughout. The gore realistic and if the film was done on a budget, they made the very best of their resources. It was very different to any movies we’ve watched before. We agreed it was a 9 out of 10 for this modern day Sweeney Todd.
