The Bye Bye Man….it’s a bye bye from me

The husband liked it. I am beginning to think he needs to get his critical hat on because he is always more positive on the feedback of movies than me. Maybe because he isn’t saturated by them all week but at least I know a film has that magic something if it grabs my attention. The Bye Bye Man didn’t.

In the 60’s a man goes on a killing spree trying to kill anybody that has heard a name. He repeats “Don’t think it, don’t speak it”. In the present day, Sasha, Eliott and John are moving into a new house. Sasha is a damp squid of a character who just floats through the script without a fight and lets the men make the decisions. Obviously, everybody is in love with her. She is uncomfortable with the house but she has no strength to actually stand up to the men railroading her into taking it. You don’t like it, don’t move in! She’s right, it does look too good to be true. Reality to students….the house is too good to be true and wallpapers awful. Of course, what you do next is have a seance with your friend, Kim because if it wasn’t haunted or a demonic portal it is now. Sasha gets ill. Everyone starts to hallucinate. You know the bye bye man is coming, if you hear a train, see a skinless dog, or see coins (why? this isn’t explained. I need explanations!). Without a back story, it’s all too random for me. So if you think about him or say his name he’ll kill you but if you try not to, you kill everyone you love and yourself???? Not really win win is it.

It was a mess in my opinion. They tried too hard, added too much. The story had no real background or reason for the existence of this bye bye man. I know that was part of the story but it was a contrived way of not having a solid narrative and it was messy. I lost track of what was happening and didn’t care enough about the characters. It had such potential but The Bye Bye Man gets 4/10 from me.  If you dig around the google, you can find the urban legend reference and the short story the film is based on which is SO much more interesting. If you want a scare do that instead.

  1. Sasha sounds like a perfectly mediocre (and terrible) character! But your description of her is so perfect I am almost tempted to watch a bit of this to see her be a limp squid. 😉

Thanks for the tip of digging around Google, though, because that legend is intriguing!
