Welcome to the Halloween Carnival Volume 2 review. Halloween Carnival Volume 2 is an anthology of five tales based around Halloween. They are five solid and well written stories with not a disappointing one among them.
MR. DARK’S CARNIVAL by Glen Hirshberg is the only really supernatural story of the collection. Sometimes that yearned for invitation is one you should miss. It’s a tale of wanting, the unknown and loss.
THE FACTS IN THE CASE OF MY SISTER by Lee Thomas is a cleverly written tale of very real human monsters and sometimes when trying to make bad things go away, you invite them in.
MISCHIEF NIGHT by Holly Newstein is a human tale of sadness and loneliness on Halloween night and the mistakes people make.
THE GHOST MAKER by Del James is another story of human monsters and the loss of humanity.
THE PUMPKIN BOY by Al Sarrantonio is a strange tale of insanity, nightmares that never leave and the lengths people go to erase the past.
All the stories were well written. Both Pumpkin Boy really evoked the scent and mystery of Halloween night as did Mr Dark’s Carnival. I would say these two stories are my favourites, even though it was hard to pick. I was disappointed with the lack of supernatural elements but I couldn’t fault the quality of this collection.
4 out of 5 stars. Thank you to netgalley for this ARC title for an honest review.
