Book Review: Halloween Carnival Vol. 1
I love anything that gets me in the mood for Halloween. This anthology of Halloween based short stories seemed just the thing. I was unfamiliar with the authors included but I’m always looking for new writers to try.
There were five stories:
STRANGE CANDY – by Robert McGammon
Be careful what you eat, it may give you strange dreams!
THE RAGE OF ACHILLES – by Kevin Lucia
A story about the seeking of forgiveness when hope is lost.
DEMON AIR – by John R. Little
A night flight with unexpected visitors.
LA HACIENDA DE LOS MUERTOS – by Lisa Morton
A Mexican folk tale with a very real leading lady.
#MAKEHALLOWEENSCARYAGAIN – by Mark Allan Gunnell
A slasher mystery that that puts the fear back into Halloween.
Each story contained the right level of spookiness with no blatant gore. As with any short story collection, it’ll be a mixed bag with some stories you’ll prefer over others and it’ll be individual taste which ones you like. The stories contained all the reasons for the season, death, love, family and most of all fear. The first two tales brought tears to my eyes, with the Rage of Achilles being my favourite of the collection and by the end the claustrophobic feel of being forced into the Halloween spirit by a mysterious killer was the perfect last story to sign off.
I’ll admit this was a treat for me, which I devoured in an afternoon.
4 stars out of 5.
Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC copy for an honest review.
